Explore Tsukiji Fish Market's Rich History

In the last few years the very, very famous Tsukiji Fish market has created some drama for tourists. Essentially, the market is now split in two–Tsukiji and Toyoso. So does this mean that there are 2 fish markets? Yes that is exactly what it means and both are unique in what they offer.

For fresh sushi, buying some sea food and small knick knacks you can indeed still go to the Tsukiji market but for the famed tuna auction you will have to trek to Toyoso. The process remains the same, you line up , get ticket and then watch the tuna action at 3.00am. Toyoso is also more geared for commercial business, so if you are buying fish in large quantities in earnest this is the place for you.

At Tsukiji, its much more of a tourist and food experience. you can go for early morning (8.30amish) sushi grilled clams, and oysters and other yummies, all accompanied by match drinks, coffee, and even sake and beers. Once your food cravings are satisfied, you can peruse the narrow lanes and see the stalls are offering items that are usually interesting kitchen ware, noodle strainers, knives and other gadgets. Its great way to chat with the welcoming locals, and soak in the atmosphere.

And while you are there, don’t forge to walk to a black up from the fish market and stop by the Hongwani temple.

Use the Hibiya metro line to get to the Tsukiji market. The subway stop is also called Tsukiji, and you will get off in the heart of the market. No getting lost!

So what is the new fish market and where is it? The NEW Fish market is the Toyosu fish market has attractions other than just the fish buying and the Tuna auction. It is home to the brand new onsen complex (super spa) that is open 24hrs, so you can drop in according to your schedule and jet lag. The complex features several onsens (hot spring water with healing powers) that come with stunning Tokyo skyline views. There are also packages for unlimited buffet, sauna and massage facilities. And if you really like it, you can even book yourself for an overnight stay. It a great way to experience local culture and food at normal everyday prices.

So if you are in the mood to unwind after some serious touristy stuff, this spa day/night might just be for you!
